city within a city built by more than 20,000 free Black people in Philadelphia in 1838.
The 1838 Philadelphia Black Metropolis is also a movement to reclaim, rewrite and restore suppressed or forgotten Black Histories

Restore our collective knowledge of free Black history in Philadelphia through talks, trainings, and curriculum and museum education tools.

Recenter the free Black population's on-going efforts for emancipation through disciplined historical research and writing.
