From 1838-'42 The Black Metropolis was attacked by mobs of white men five times:

The mob attacks were incredibly violent. Homes were burned, churches and institutions were destroyed, and people of color experienced physical violence and murder. The history of this violence has been hidden within the word 'race riot.' A riot is an unorganized, chaotic aggression from two or more equally aggressive parties. But In these "riots," white mobs marched into the Black community armed with weapons with the intention to inflict damage and terrorize the community. Using the term 'riot' is a misnomer bordering on the erasure of culpability. Therefore, we use the term 'Mob Attack.'

We are attempting to recreate the routes and impact of the white mob attacks using mapping technology. We started with the 1834 'Flying Circus' mob attack.
