About Us:

 

The 1838 Black Metropolis project is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Philadelphia's Black community during the antebellum period. Through meticulous research, innovative digital mapping techniques, and community engagement initiatives, we aim to restore, rewrite, and reclaim narratives that have been overlooked or marginalized.  We have been awarded by The Library Company, The Preservation Alliance and others for our ability to bring history to life.

We have a partnership with The Black Journey walking tour where our Black Metropolis 101 tour is being offered through The Black Journey.  This position will be a Black Metropolis tour guide with The Black Journey tour company. 

 

Position Overview:

 

  • Job Title: Part-Time Tour Guide

  • Location: Philadelphia, PA

  • Pay: $15-20 Hourly, commensurate with experience

Job Description:

​

  • Are you passionate about Black history in Philadelphia? Do you love telling stories and engaging others in meaningful conversations about history? We’re looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Part-Time Tour Guide.

  • This role is perfect for students  or retirees or anyone looking to share their love for history while gaining valuable experience. As a Tour Guide, you will lead visitors through our tours, bringing to life the rich and vibrant history of Black communities in Philadelphia.

Key Responsibilities:

​

  • Conduct engaging and informative tours focused on the Black history of Philadelphia.

  • Share compelling stories and historical facts that resonate with a diverse audience.

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all tour participants.

  • Continually enhance your knowledge of Black history and culture in Philadelphia.

  • Provide excellent customer service to all visitors.

​

Qualifications:

​

  • A strong passion for Black history, particularly in Philadelphia.

  • Excellent storytelling and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to connect with and engage a diverse group of people.

  • Flexibility to work part-time, including weekends and holidays.

  • Previous experience in a similar role is a plus, but not required.
